[...] But if most of the characters audiences will encounter are, like most of the filmmakers, relatively youthful, there are also more seasoned voices, including [...] Xiaolu Guo’s observant parents, whose trip from China to Europe is chronicled in their daughter’s affectionate documentary “We Went to Wonderland.” Ms. Guo’s film is 76 minutes of ordinary doings and diary entries, shot in black and white, starring two decidedly, even proudly, ordinary people. In its unassuming way, though, “We Went to Wonderland” spans decades and continents and suggests endless complexity beneath its simple surface. Like a lot of the other selections at New Directors this year, it may be a small movie, but it’s also bigger than it looks.
